Artist Statement
My art practice focuses on creating drawn and painted artifacts. I use a mix of gestural lines with application of paint on intentionally fragmented surfaces. My process consists of drawing preliminary sketches, cutting the surfaces to work on, and slowly building up layers with each material. Attached around the compositions is writing referring to the subject matter in each work. Each piece refers to different kinds of passages, whether they be myths, history, genealogies, allegories etc.
The meaning of my artifacts is achieved through “signs”. On one end, I refer to ancient mythology, history, and anthropology. On the other hand, I refer to elements of hip hop culture and graphic media. My work is about exchange, both between times and cultures. I focus on how the past, present, and future compress into one artifact.
Artist bio
I am an artist originally from Baltimore Maryland and Saint Louis Missouri. I am a graduate of Covenant College in Lookout Mountain GA. I have exhibited across the country, gotten a grant, done a couple of residencies, and a variety of artist talks.
My primary interest is focusing on how the ancient and contemporary intersect simultaneously. My research spans into historical studies of cultural exchange, intersections between time periods, impact of old and new mythologies.
