Levitical Sacrifice

These works focus on the book of Leviticus. For our times, they portray strange and off kilter ceremonies that the Levite priest to atone for the Israelite’s sin. There are constant references to body fluid in the process of cleanliness and purity. Though strange in our time, these rituals resemble some of the new contemporary performance art of our time, showing the way in which things both stay the same and change.

In these off cut papers, the space and ground is blank. The piece renders figures with graphite pencil, mixed with textural Acrylic paint/gesso and vellum. These elements cause a contemplative and confrontational aspect. The use of complex figures in a blank ground forces a degree of directness to the viewer. It reflects my own struggle with physical and mental health issues.
